Vaqueros looking for a UTRGV GPA calculator face a detail that most generic tools miss entirely: UTRGV measures academic standing, Latin Honors eligibility, and suspension risk using a distinct concept called the institutional GPA  a figure calculated exclusively from coursework completed at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, with no transfer grades included. This gpa calculator utrgv is built directly from the UTRGV 2025-2026 Student Policies Catalog  Undergraduate Grading and the UTRGV Academic Standing & Honors page, matching the same numbers used by the UTRGV Office of the University Registrar.

Official UTRGV Grading 4.0 Scale

The UTRGV grading scale assigns descriptive quality labels alongside each grade point value  a feature absent from UT Austin’s and UTSA’s published grading tables. UTRGV explicitly names A as “Excellent,” B as “Good,” C as “Satisfactory,” D as “Below Average,” and F as “Failure.”

These aren’t just labels they carry policy weight: a C (Satisfactory) is the minimum for many core courses and is also the floor for major and minor field averages. A D is passing in isolation but creates GPA risk that compounds quickly over multiple courses. There are no plus or minus grades at UTRGV no A+, no B−, no C+.

UTRGV Undergraduate Grading Scale (2025-26)

Letter Grade Quality Description Grade Points / Hour GPA Impact Policy Notes
A Excellent 4.00 Highest GPA contribution Maximum grade; required for President's List (4.0 term GPA)
B Good 3.00 Above average Minimum for Dean's List (3.50 term GPA requires A and B mix)
C Satisfactory 2.00 Average — meets degree floor Required in College Algebra, Freshman English, major/minor fields
D Below Average 1.00 Lowers cumulative GPA significantly Passing in a single course but does not satisfy major/minor field average
F Failure 0.00 Severe GPA impact; hours count as attempted Included in attempted hours; triggers standing review when cumulative GPA drops below 2.0
⚠️ The Incomplete (I) grade at UTRGV two outcomes, one deadline: An Incomplete is only valid when a student is already passing the course and has a valid reason for not completing work by the term’s end. The instructor and student must file a written agreement specifying remaining work and a deadline. If that work is not submitted and graded by the end of the next long term (Fall or Spring), the I converts to a failing grade  or an alternate grade specified in the original agreement.
Crucially, a grade of NR (Not Reported)  assigned when a faculty member misses the grading deadline can negatively affect a student’s financial aid eligibility, making it distinct from an I.

Any generic ut austin grade calculator online that includes an $A+ = 4.33$ option for standard majors is incorrect and will skew your data.

Academic Standing

UTRGV Academic Standing Four-Tier System with Summer Recovery Path

UTRGV operates a more nuanced academic standing system than most UT System campuses. Rather than jumping directly from Good Standing to Suspension, UTRGV uses four distinct tiers: Good Standing, Probation, Continued Probation, and Suspension. The progression between tiers depends on both the institutional cumulative GPA and the term GPA in combination  not either figure alone. Academic standing is evaluated at the end of each Fall and Spring semester only; Summer terms affect your institutional GPA but do not by themselves produce a standing assignment.

Inst. GPA ≥ 2.0
Good Standing
Institutional GPA at or above 2.0 regardless of term GPA. Recorded on transcript. Grants early registration access if also on Dean's or President's List.
Inst. GPA < 2.0 + Term GPA ≥ 2.0
Continued Probation
Previously on Probation: institutional GPA still below 2.0 but term GPA reached 2.0 or higher. Progress noted not yet at suspension risk. Enrollment permitted; working toward recovery.
Inst. < 2.0 + Term < 2.0
Suspension Standing
From Probation or Continued Probation: both institutional GPA and term GPA below 2.0. Cannot enroll in upcoming fall or spring. Must appeal within deadline or sit out one long semester.
⚠️
Inst. GPA < 2.0
Probation Standing
Institutional GPA below 2.0 in any fall or spring term. Can also result from withdrawing (W grades) after census day in your very first term. Recorded on transcript. Enrollment not blocked.
💡 UTRGV Summer Suspension Recovery  a critical option most students miss:
Students suspended after the Spring semester are still permitted to enroll in Summer courses without filing an appeal. If your institutional GPA reaches 2.0 or above after Summer II grades are processed, you are automatically cleared to enroll in Fall with no additional action required. If your institutional GPA remains below 2.0 after Summer II, you must submit an Academic Suspension Appeal by the published deadline. This summer pathway is one of UTRGV’s most accessible reinstatement routes use it strategically by prioritizing courses where you previously earned D or F grades, since the repeat policy uses your most recent grade.
⚠️ Academic Suspension ≠ Financial Aid SAP Suspension at UTRGV.
These are two separate systems with separate appeal processes. An academic suspension appeal submitted to the Academic Suspension Committee does not restore financial aid eligibility a separate Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) appeal must be filed with the Financial Aid office. If you receive both notices, respond to both within their respective deadlines.
💡 Important distinction most calculators miss: UT Austin tracks your undergraduate GPA and graduate GPA separately. The Dean’s List is assessed per semester — a student on probation one semester can qualify for honors the next. These are evaluated independently by the Registrar.
